Local Dentist explains how Bruxism (Teeth Grinding) can lead to several dental problems

Everyone dreams of having the “perfect smile” but for some teeth color isn’t the main concern; the concern is the teeth in general. A serious dental issue that may affect your teeth is bruxism, commonly known as teeth grinding. Bruxism does not usually cause harm, but when teeth grinding occurs on a regular basis your teeth can become damaged and other oral health complications can arise. For nearly 20 years, Dr. Sherzoy is known to be a talented dentist who has helped patients solve their problem with bruxism, preventing any problems in the near future. Teeth grinding and clenching, more commonly referred to as bruxism is an involuntary action, usually occurring at night and done by millions of people in America. Although there are many possible causes, the main one appears to be stress and anxiety.  In the morning, you may wake up with several symptoms, including a throbbing headache, neck, and shoulder and jaw pain. In chronic teeth grinding cases you may result in a fracturing, loosening, or loss of teeth. Since grinding often occurs during sleep, most people are unaware that they grind their teeth. Many times you may learn that you grind your teeth by your loved one who hears the grinding at night. Bruxism mouth guards are very efficient, because it helps prevent additional teeth damage or tooth loss. The bruxism mouth guards protect the crown, enamel, implants and bridges of teeth. They help keep the teeth apart to avoid grinding and clenching. Custom-fit night mouth guards are available only from the dentist’s office. Dr. Sherzoy says, “During regular visits to our office, the teeth are examined for evidence of bruxism – often indicated by the tips of the teeth appearing flat. If symptoms are present, the condition will be observed for changes over the next several visits before a treatment program is established.”

Root Canal

Have you ever wondered what a Root Canal exactly is? Well I have that answer for you, A Root Canal is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or has become infected. During the Root Canal procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inner side of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. Now many thinking about the nerve being taken out, are worried that this may affect the health of their tooth. In truth, the nerve mostly provides sensory to the tooth, providing the sensation of hot or cold. The absence of the nerve will not affect your everyday life functioning of the tooth. When a tooth’s nerve tissue or pulp is damaged it causes to break down and the bacteria begin to multiply within the pulp chamber.  For those that are not aware, a pulp chamber contains all the nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue in your teeth, which enter through the base of the tooth’s root, travel up through the root canal and gather at the pulp chamber. Bacteria and other tooth decays can cause a serious infection and an abscessed tooth. Now, many are wondering what an Abscessed tooth is?  An abscess is a Pus-filled pocket that forms at the end of the root of the tooth. Symptoms that you may need a Root Canal are: severe toothache, pain upon chewing or application of pressure, prolonged sensitivity/pain to hot or cold temperatures, darkening of the tooth, swelling and tenderness in the gums, and persistent or recurring pimples on the gums. Doctor Sherzoy has said, that if you feel these symptoms you should not hesitate to come in, he assures the best quality of work. The procedure of a Root Canal may require one or more office visits and can be performed by a Dentist. Anesthesia is used to numb the area near the tooth, many times anesthesia may not be necessary, since the nerve is dead. Dr. Sherzoy has stated that he still apply anesthesia to the area to give more comfort to his patients.  For over 15 years Doctor Sherzoy has been in practice and has specialized in many procedures such as Root Canals.

Dr. Sherzoy explains the damages smoking does to your oral health

Not many people think about the way smoking can affect your teeth.  Everyone’s main focus is that smoking cause’s just cancer, high blood pressure, heart attacks and heart disease.  Smoking affects a lot more than just the body but smoking has a large effect on one’s oral health. People who smoke increase the risk of developing oral cancer, gum disease (which leads to tooth loss and loss of jaw bone). Smoking also cause you to have, bad breath, tooth discoloration, inflammation of the salivary gland, increased build up of plaque and tartar on your teeth and many more complications. The American Heart Association has stated that about 23 percent of adults smoke and about 30 percent of adolescents smoke in just the US, this is said to be the highest it’s ever been.  Dr. Sherzoy of Bergen County, NJ has been educating his patients about the harm they are causing to their mouth by smoking for nearly 20 years.  Patients from all over Bergen County have trusted Dr. Sherzoy to restore their smile from the damages smoking has caused. Even if you don’t smoke cigarettes, cigars or pipes; smokeless tobacco is just as harmful. Smokeless tobacco products such as snuff and chewing tobacco have at least 28 chemicals (same as cigarettes, pipes, etc).  Those have been shown to increase the risk of oral, throat and esophagus cancer.  Smokeless tobacco can irritate your gums, causing it to recede or pull away from your teeth. This can cause the root of your teeth to become exposed, this can make it very uncomfortable to eat and drink due to the sensitivity.
