Smoking and Oral Health

Its very publicized smoking causes cancer, high blood pressure, heart attacks and heart disease.  Smoking also causes oral health issues as well.  If you are a smoker, you are increasing your risk of developing oral cancer and gum disease (which leads to tooth loss and loss of jaw bone).  Dr. Sherzoy of Bergen County has been educating his patients about the harm they are causing to their mouth by smoking for nearly 20 years.  Patients from all over Bergen County have trusted Dr. Sherzoy to restore their smile from the damages smoking has caused.

There are so many different risks’ that come with smoking, these are just a few.

  • Bad breath
  • Tooth discoloration
  • Inflammation of the salivary gland openings on the roof of the mouth
  • Increased build up of plaque and tartar on the teeth
  • Increased loss of bone within the jaw
  • Increased risk of leukoplakia, white patches inside the mouth
  • Increased risk of developing gum disease, a leading cause of tooth loss
  • Delayed healing process following tooth extraction, periodontal treatment, or oral surgery
  • Lower success rate of dental implant procedures
  • Increased risk of developing oral cancer

Dr. Sherzoy says, “If you are have any signs of gum disease; including bleeding gums, loose teeth, or any abnormalities you should see you dentist to be screened for oral cancer and periodontal disease.” Oral cancer, which includes cancers of the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, hard and soft palate, sinuses, and throat, can be life threatening if not diagnose and treated early. The overall 1 year survival rate for patients with all stages of oral cancer is 81%, making it a risk factor.
