Not many people think about the way smoking can affect your teeth. Everyone’s main focus is that smoking cause’s just cancer, high blood pressure, heart attacks and heart disease. Smoking affects a lot more than just the body but smoking has a large effect on one’s oral health. People who smoke increase the risk of developing oral cancer, gum disease (which leads to tooth loss and loss of jaw bone). Smoking also cause you to have, bad breath, tooth discoloration, inflammation of the salivary gland, increased build up of plaque and tartar on your teeth and many more complications. The American Heart Association has stated that about 23 percent of adults smoke and about 30 percent of adolescents smoke in just the US, this is said to be the highest it’s ever been. Dr. Sherzoy of Bergen County, NJ has been educating his patients about the harm they are causing to their mouth by smoking for nearly 20 years.
