Dr. Sherzoy explains the damages smoking does to your oral health

Not many people think about the way smoking can affect your teeth.  Everyone’s main focus is that smoking cause’s just cancer, high blood pressure, heart attacks and heart disease.  Smoking affects a lot more than just the body but smoking has a large effect on one’s oral health. People who smoke increase the risk of developing oral cancer, gum disease (which leads to tooth loss and loss of jaw bone). Smoking also cause you to have, bad breath, tooth discoloration, inflammation of the salivary gland, increased build up of plaque and tartar on your teeth and many more complications. The American Heart Association has stated that about 23 percent of adults smoke and about 30 percent of adolescents smoke in just the US, this is said to be the highest it’s ever been.  Dr. Sherzoy of Bergen County, NJ has been educating his patients about the harm they are causing to their mouth by smoking for nearly 20 years.  Patients from all over Bergen County have trusted Dr. Sherzoy to restore their smile from the damages smoking has caused. Even if you don’t smoke cigarettes, cigars or pipes; smokeless tobacco is just as harmful. Smokeless tobacco products such as snuff and chewing tobacco have at least 28 chemicals (same as cigarettes, pipes, etc).  Those have been shown to increase the risk of oral, throat and esophagus cancer.  Smokeless tobacco can irritate your gums, causing it to recede or pull away from your teeth. This can cause the root of your teeth to become exposed, this can make it very uncomfortable to eat and drink due to the sensitivity.

Dentist in Bergen County expresses why untreated Gum Disease may lead to serious health complications.

Periodontal disease is an infection of the tissues that support your teeth. Periodontal diseases attack just below the gum in which causes the supporting tissues to break down. As the tissues are damaged it creates a deeper pocket around the tooth. Once someone has periodontal disease it’s not reversible, but can be controlled with proper maintenance. Dr. Sherzoy strongly believes that being treated at once for bleeding gum disease is a smart way to prevent an unhealthy smile. You may not think that Periodontal Gum Disease is fatal but indeed it is. It causes heart attacks, strokes and birth defects. The American Academy of Periodontology, explains several theories that link periodontal disease and heart disease. One theory is that oral bacteria can affect the heart when it enters the blood stream, attaching to fatty plaques in the coronary arteries (heart blood vessels) and contributing to clot formation. There is now new evidence that besides smoking, alcohol use and drug use during pregnancy can cause low birth weight, also periodontal disease is becoming a new risk factor.  More research is needed to confirm how periodontal disease may affect pregnancy outcomes, but it appears periodontal disease increases levels of biological fluid that induces labor.
