You have probably heard the term Sedation Dentistry before. Many people have misconceptions about Sedation Dentistry and many questions. For instance, what is Sedation Dentistry? Is it safe? Is it for me?
If you are neglecting proper dental care because of a fear of dental procedures, consider Conscious Sedation Dentistry.
What is Conscious Sedation Dentistry?
Conscious Sedation dentistry is where the patient experiences an advanced level of a relaxation state, where the patient is still conscious and retains the ability to independently and continuously respond to physical and verbal commands.
Is Conscious Sedation Dentistry Safe?
Sedation dentistry is nothing new in the dental field. The administration of sedation and general anesthesia has been an integral part of dental practice since the 1840s. Individual State dental boards have the responsibility to ensure that only qualified dentists use sedation and general anesthesia. Dr. Sherzoy is trained and certified by the DOCS Education system. You can learn more about this prestigious organization online at: http://www.docseducation.com
How is Conscious Sedation achieved?
The 2 most common types of Sedation (Sedation Dentistry) used by General and Restorative Dentists who utilize sedation are Oral Conscious Sedation and Inhalation Sedation.
The Oral Medication used for Oral Conscious Sedation in dentistry are from a group of drugs known as Benzodiazapines. The medication produces a very relaxed feeling in patients. Most patients are so relaxed and at-ease that they remember very few details of the actual procedure.
For mild to moderate anxiety, inhaling Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen (“laughing gas”) is used frequently. This is one of the most common forms of Nitrous Oxide Sedation to their patients.

Here at Bogota Dental Center we treat our patients as if they were at home. From the moment they enter the office we offer them refreshments, treat them with respect and make them feel comfortable as possible. Before a cosmetic procedure, the patient feels the comfort of their home by relaxing in our recline able chairs and watch TV until the end of the visit.
Cosmetic dentistry involves dental procedures with the aim of improving the overall aesthetics or “look” of your smile to make it appear more attractive. Cosmetic Dentistry involves cosmetic dental treatments that enhance your appearance. A person may be unhappy with the color, size or shape of their teeth or gums. Also have gaps between your teeth or have crooked teeth. Some of other common reasons for cosmetic dentistry are discolored teeth, discolored old white fillings, Amalgam (“silver”) fillings, broken or decayed teeth, gum disease (discolored, puffy, red, swollen gums with plaque and tartar build-up) etc.
Dr. Sherzoy says cosmetic dentistry procedures require regular oral hygiene care and may require maintenance over time. For example, teeth whitening must be repeated on occasion in order to maintain brightness. Porcelain veneers may chip or break off and need replacement. Permanent composite bonding may stain and require enhancement or replacement. Dental crowns typically require replacement after 10 to 15 years. Gummy smile improvements may also require enhancement over time. Oral Health in general should be maintained healthy daily to assure you a healthy and white smile for years to come.
Bergen County residents are encouraged to contact Dr Sherzoy to learn more about our procedures. A free, private consultation is available.
